Hiring bias calculator
Upload a CSV of past candidates, with one row per person, their category columns (for example sex and race/ethnicity) and the tool's outcome. You get selection or scoring rates and impact ratios per category and for each combination, the figures NYC Local Law 144 bias audits report.
🔒 The CSV is read by your browser only. It is never uploaded.
How it's calculated
- Selection rate = people selected in a category ÷ people in that category. For a score, the scoring rate is the share of the category scoring above the median of the whole sample.
- Impact ratio = a category's rate ÷ the highest category's rate.
- Categories under 2% of the sample may be left out of the comparison. They are still shown. Rows with a blank or "unknown" category are counted separately.
- Ratios under 0.8 are highlighted using the "four-fifths" rule of thumb from US EEOC guidance. NYC Local Law 144 sets no pass/fail threshold. It requires the figures to be audited and published.
This calculator helps you prepare and understand the numbers. It is not a bias audit. Under Local Law 144 the audit must be done by an independent auditor, who can't be the tool's developer, seller or user. This is information, not legal advice.
Need the audit itself? Vihsm runs independent bias audits of hiring and scoring tools, with impact ratios, calibration and drift checks and a published summary, at a fixed price. We never audit a tool we built or sell.
